Luxury vinyl plank flooring care & cleaning FAQ
At iStone Floors, we know your floors are a big investment in your home. With the right care, your Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring will stay beautiful for years to come. Here are the answers to the most common questions we get from homeowners about cleaning and protecting LVP.
What’s the best cleaner for LVP floors?
Stick with a pH-neutral vinyl floor cleanser like Bona®. For everyday messes, that’s all you’ll need. If you’re dealing with something tougher, you can mix 1 part isopropyl alcohol with 2 parts distilled water. For stubborn spots, increase the alcohol ratio. For adhesive or oil-based stains, denatured alcohol is your go-to. Always test any cleaner in a small, hidden spot first.
Are vinegar, wax, or wood floor cleaners safe on vinyl floors?
No. These products can do more harm than good. Vinegar is too acidic, wax and oil-based cleaners leave a dull residue, and wood-care products can make the surface slippery and lifeless. Your vinyl floors deserve products made just for them.
How can I protect my floors from scratches and dirt?
Prevention makes all the difference. Place area rugs at doorways to catch dirt before it gets tracked in, and a rug in front of the kitchen sink where spills are common. Be sure rugs have a breathable pad underneath to prevent scratching. For furniture, add non-staining felt pads under the legs — heavier items may need bigger pads for proper protection.
What’s the right way to handle spills?
Simple — wipe them up immediately. Vinyl is durable, but spills left too long can cause stains or damage.
Can I mop luxury vinyl with water?
Avoid wet-mopping. Too much water can seep into seams and dull the finish. Instead, use dust mop then a lightly damp mop — just enough to clean, without leaving standing water behind.
Can I steam clean vinyl floors?
No. Steam can warp and damage vinyl planks, and it will void your warranty. Stick to gentle cleaners and low-moisture mopping.
Are high heels and heavy furniture a risk on vinyl floors?
Yes. High heels, cleats, and certain sports shoes put thousands of pounds of pressure on your flooring surface, which can leave dents. Always lift heavy furniture instead of sliding it, to avoid scratching or gouging your planks.
Can I buff my LVP floors to restore shine?
Not with a high-speed buffer. It can permanently damage your vinyl surface. A regular clean with the right products will keep your floors looking fresh and beautiful without the extra risk.
